NFL Notes: Lions cut Kevin Jones and Kalimba Edwards

In an attempt to cut ties with failed experiements, the Detroit Lions cut running back Kevin Jones and defensive end Kalimba Edwards.

Jones, who was productive when healthy, has spent more time in the training room than on the field since being drafted in the first round out of Viriginia Tech in 2004. Edwards, on the other hand, hasn't played the way Detroit officials thought he was capable of after posting a career-highs in sacks (7) and fumble recoveries (10) in 2005 and has accumulated a combined six sacks in 2006 and 2007.
Both will be scooped up by the time the draft rolls around, as teams will be looking to fill holes on their roster.

TE Bubba Franks close to signing with Jets

Franks, who served as the second tight end for the Packers behind Donald Lee in 2007, will be expected to fill the same role in New York behind Chris Baker, who posted a career year this past season.

WR Bryant Johnson hops from one NFC West team to another

After the Cardinals decided to let wide receiver Bryant Johnson test the market, the former 2003 first round draft pick out Penn State signed with San Francisco as the 49ers severed ties with Darrell Jackson.

Johnson adds size and jump-ball ability to the Niners' receiving corps and should push for a starting spot in San Fran. On the other hand, teams looking for a capable route runner winner and someone with extensive knowledge of the West Coast offense may look for Jackson's services as he has shown he can produce during his time in Seattle. His stay in San Francisco can't be deemed his fault entirely--just look who he had to work with at quarterback.

Big-bodied WR Drew Carter goes coast-to-coast

The Oakland Raiders added another big-play wide receiver in Drew Carter when they pryed him away from Carolina. The 6-foot-4 Carter, Javon Walker and Ronald Curry have the ability to take advantage of JaMarcus Russell's big arm--it just remains to be seen if the former LSU star can pick up the playbook and put down the cheeseburgers as it's rumored he's balloned to nearly 300 pounds.
